Nanpantan Hall

has been a retreat centre for the ‘school of philosophy’ since 1986

From family home to a spiritual retreat centre.

Built in the 1870s as a private manor, Nanpantan Hall was once home to local industrialist Edward Warner, who gave his name to the hosiery-mill “Cartwright and Warner” on Nottingham Road, Loughborough, and later to William Byerley Paget.

In 1986 the Hall and its beautiful 30-acre estate were donated to the School of Philosophy and Economic Science, giving the building a new purpose: a centre for spiritual inquiry, practical philosophy, and communal retreat, it is one of three retreat centres for the School of Philosophy an educational charity.

Today, Nanpantan Hall continues to honour this heritage while evolving into a place where philosophy is lived, through study, service, and care for the land itself.

Nanpantan Hall stands at the intersection of history and living practice. It is where the heritage of a 19th-century manor meets the living work of philosophy, meditation, service, and community. Here, philosophy is not just studied, it is lived.

Through courses, retreats, and venue hire, the Hall welcomes people seeking growth, quiet, learning, or simply a pause from modern life. The School focuses on practical living philosophy and mantra meditation, drawing on Eastern and Western traditions that share a central insight: the unity underlying all existence. The School has a long-established expertise in teaching mantra meditation as a path to clarity and stillness.

Nanpantan Hall is also home to a developing Rewinding Project, restoring the estate’s natural environment and supporting the return of native plants and wildlife. This care for the land reflects the School’s principles of stewardship and harmony, ensuring the Hall remains a sanctuary for study and renewal.
